Victorian Campaign Desk

Circa 1890. Rare, English Campaign Desk. Amazingly intact, Victorian Era folding Campaign table. Elegant design and proportions, and still complete and functional. This fine desk retains all its original hardware that allows it to be closed tightly in a folded position and by pressing an original brass button opened and then locked in place as a desk with another original brass catch on it's under-side. The interior is the original grained leather, with the original ink-well ring. Fabric hinge between the writing surface has deteriorated with age and the leather is quite stiff and dry. The only repair (pictured) is a re-gluing of a crack to the top of the leg where it attaches to the desk top. Solid Mahogany, all original finish, fine "as found" condition.

What is interesting is that these desks were carried in the field for Officers and could be strapped at times to the sides of horses. This particular desk shows a rubbing to the finish high on the legs that one might expect in such situations. This table was purchased in Halifax by the previous owner in the late 70's. A similar desk can be found in Halifax at the Museum inside Citadel Hill. Very difficult piece to locate and great for Boer War Collections.

22 wide x 37 tall x 6 deep closed, 22 wide x 29 tall x 22 deep when open.
